El El Frijoles

In the woods of Maine, in a barn in the middle of nowhere, resides some of the best Mexican food you’ll find anywhere.

A documentary about El El Frijoles and its owners, Michele Levesque and Michael Rossney:

Michele and Michael were kind enough to let me be a fly on the wall for a few days, hovering about their activities, and then sitting down with them to discuss their restaurant.

Watch at your own risk, it will leave you hungry for more.

El El Frijoles is located in Sargentville, ME.

This production was the epitome of a one-man band, it was shot by me with no crew. I did the post-production editing, grading and sound optimization as well. The filming was done with a Canon C300 and is a mix of handheld, monopod, and sticks work. Post was done in FCP X.

  1. Hi Jon,

Really enjoyed that short film and it made me want to fly across the atlantic to try the food out. Whilst they don’t seem short of customers I’m sure your film will attract others to try out the cuisine.

The only thing I missed was a tiny bit of ambient noise to make me really feel the atmosphere.

If I ever get over to the USA I am really drawn to exploring the East Coast – it all looks a bit like England used to look a while back and I’d enjoy the proximity to all the inlets and creeks.

    Thanks

    • Thanks Mark!

I did record some ambient sounds via a small shotgun mic on the C300 while shooting b-roll. A Sennheiser MKE400. But the restaurant is very noisy when in use between multiple fans running, compressors for the refrigerators, vents in the kitchen, music on in the background, etc. It’s not distracting as a customer but recorded it can be a lot white noise. I’m looking now to see what’s usable or what I might have to foley. I wanted to get the basic piece online first and then take another pass at the sound.

That particular area of the country, the Blue Hill Peninsula in Maine, is gorgeous and relatively undeveloped. One reason I like it!

Note: Updated version with ambient sound added July, 2013.

Great piece! Wonder if I can make it up there in time for dinner…
