Dock Bridge to Manhattan

I spent this past Saturday on the tail end of one of my longer assignments – 16 days photographing to create a library of images to be used in marketing the state of New Jersey to businesses. The site is the future US headquarters of Panasonic and while this image doesn’t quite fit the mold, it’s not a glossy postcard view, it certainly tells a story which was too good to pass up.

From the roof of Panasonic’s new building in Newark, looking east across the Passaic River to Harrison, NJ and Red Bull Stadium; with NYC off in the distance.

  1. Great Picture Jon,

I love the bridge in the foreground with the huge winching wheels. Presumably it used to rise up to let shipping through. Industrial landscapes fascinate me. I tried to find the bridge on Google Earth but failed.

  2. Mark – thanks. I’m a fan of industrial landscapes as well.

It’s a vertical lift bridge, actually a pair of them.

Here’s are two Google Maps links: http://goo.gl/maps/Jswyy & http://goo.gl/maps/h6Mcq and I added a Wikipedia link to the blog post.

If you right-click the image to “open link in a new window” you can see a very large version, lots of detail.
