In Why Light? Video Interview Lighting Setup in early December I looked at how I lit a recent interview project. The setting was a moot court room at a law school in New York City. On set, in addition to my regular client, was a few observers who wanted to see how I worked and who were thinking through what type of video and production level would best suit their needs. In the blog post I attempted to put myself in their shoes.
The video from that project is now online – it’s an interview with Law Professor Carl Minzner about the themes and ideas in his new book, End of an Era: How China’s Authoritarian Revival is Undermining Its Rise.

Lights used: Four Litepanels 4x Bicolor Astras and two Litepanels Sola 4s.
Modifiers: Matthews Grip Equipment RoadRags II Artificial Silks and Flags; Litepanels Astra Softbox + Grid, Litepanels 30 Degree Grid.
Camera & Lens: Canon C300 Mark II with a CN-E 18-80mm lens. Lens at 44mm, f/4 aperture. Filmed in Clog3, Rec. 709, 4K capture.
Tripod & Head: Sachtler Flowtech 75, FSB-8 Fluid Head.
Audio: Sennheiser MKH-416 Shotgun boomed over subject, Sennheiser MKE 2 Gold Lav hidden on subject and transmitted via RØDELink wireless kit. Both running into the camera.
Post-Production: Edited in FCP X in a 1080 HD timeline to allow for punching-in in post.
